Etiquette and Importance of Networking

Preparations

I recall this being my absolute favorite event of Tier 1! Not only was it going to be a professional event  acting as a chance to meet professionals within our courses of study, but there would also be free food. In order to attend the dinner, Tier 1 members had to attend the workshop "The Art of Networking", where we learned about how to develop an "Elevator Pitch" about ourselves, the proper way to shake hands, and how to conduct ourselves at a business dinner from what utensils to use to what topics were appropriate for discussion.

Networking and Elevator Pitch

Networking is the act of connecting with other professionals to exchange greetings, contacts, and goals for careers. As a business student, I was already familiar with the idea of an "Elevator Pitch" which is a short introduction of one's skills and background.  However, I found it difficult to determine what to include in said pitch. It took several draft writings, verbal practices, and narrowing down skills to come up with the optimal pitch. This also aided in networking by making strong connections with professionals in a short amount of time.

The Event

As I anticipated, the dinner was a big success! I recall sitting with one woman who was affiliated with the Appoquinimink School District. This was outside of my major, but we still had an enjoyable conversation regarding funding in public schools and our shared desire for keeping the arts in education. She gave me her business card and I sent her a message thanking her for her time. While teaching may not be my chosen career, this exchange was an excellent way to practice talking to other professionals within my chosen field.

Skills Acquired

The three main things I learned from this workshop are the ability to form a concise elevator pitch to introduce myself and my skillset, proper dining etiquette with professionals, and maintaining connections with professionals with follow-up messages. These are all skills I've exercised outside of a BHLP setting and are directly responsible for my upcoming job opportunity.

Application Outside of the BHLP

Before my involvement in the BHLP, I wouldn't have had the courage to contact a professional asking for advice or a possible job opportunity. However, my luck has since turned! When I lost my previous part-time job due to permanent closure, I knew I had to find another job. In the many conversations I had with my previous boss, I learned his business's accountant, Cornerstone CPA, was recruiting tax interns. I followed the basic Elevator Pitch format via email and attached my resume. In the end, I was offered the job and I start very soon! The dinner for the BHLP helped me overcome my uncertainties in networking and  helped me secure a new job that I enjoyed!

Example of Networking Message

Note: To Protect Identities, faces and Names are blurred Out

For the professional in this message, I only have the privilege to meet with her once face-to-face. Sending this message inquiring about a job was a bit nerve-wracking at first, but it was necessary to get my name out there and advocate for my education and skills. I used the BHLP's advice to state my name, my mission, and my reason for contacting along with posting my resume for a better picture of who I am as a potential employee. It all ultimately paid off and I have a great job opportunity awaiting me!
