I'm a strong believer in pursuing a career you enjoy. It's not possible to have the desire to excel in a given field without the passion to drive it. Theatre is something I've always enjoyed participating in and it cannot survive without proper business and financial management. By combining my passion for the performing arts with my accounting education, I can fulfill my desire to keep the arts alive and positively influencing our community.
Finishing my degree program and licensure procedures aside, I plan to make connections with those involved in the performing arts industry. I've already started this process by participating in community theatre productions and meeting fellow actors with side hustles in voice acting for commercials, theatrical producing, and marketing. I plan to then collect these contacts, pitch my skills, and find avenues to enter the field.
As this is a long-term goal, I hope to accomplish this within the next 15 years. Careers take time to mature and navigate through, so I am willing to take that time to enjoy successes and learn from mistakes.
The primary barrier is how different theatre/performing arts and accounting/MIS from each other. On one hand, artistic careers are flexible, driven by emotion, and are more communicative. Accounting and other data-focused careers are organized, follow strict procedures, and usually involve solving problems in the office. It can be quite difficult to find a way to mesh these fields together.
The main advantage is that I have experience in both fields. I have accounting/MIS experience via my internship with BDO as well as being the treasurer to an RSO. I've also been heavily involved in theatre and the performing arts since the age of eleven. This gives me the insight on how business and art can be brought together. For example, many professional productions require fundraising to obtain money for venue, costuming, and set expenses. A career in producing could allow a chance to oversee finances and making sure the production is running according to plan.
