I'm currently the treasurer for Riot Act, one of the two main improvisational comedy groups at the University of Delaware. We specialize in long-form improv, which is the art of creating characters, scenes, and stories extemporaneously. The content of our shows are rated roughly PG-13, but never cross into offensive or gross content. This group gave me the ability to have a creative outlet and gain lifelong friends, something I hope to encourage new members if I'm president. If I obtain this role, I can enact positive changes such as booking performances at out-of-state schools and improv our group's reputation.
The first step to obtain this goal is to have an open conversation with the current president for how he would like the group to continue. I plan to ask what aspects of leadership have worked and not worked for him and how an ideal leader of Riot Act would conduct themselves. Next, I will analyze my own strengths and shadows that can help or harm these ideals the president has put forth and control them accordingly. Most importantly, I will exemplify an ideal improviser: open-mindedness, a quick-witted mindset, generosity with scene-time for other improvisers, and friendliness to all. This not only shows my value as a participant, but as a potential leader as well.
I hope to accomplish this goal by the end of this current 2022-2023 school year. This will allow me to serve as president for my final year of undergraduate school in 2023-2024.
There are two main barriers: the qualifications of other members and my commitments outside of school. I plan to keep up part-time employment, as well as other extracurricular activities while also participating in Riot Act. This could prove to be overwhelming and get in the way of presidential duties. However, I plan to alleviate these issues by securing open, honest communication with the current president and vice president, as well as going against commitments that prevent me from participating in Riot Act. For example, clubs that meet on Mondays and Thursdays will not be possible since those are Riot Act's meeting times.
On the surface, I appear to have the advantage of being a rising senior (these members take precedence in the presidency position). However, I will not be the only graduating member next year. One other advantage is my dedication to the organization. I've never missed any performances, took charge in coordinating marketing efforts for the shows, and encouraged other members to utilize ttheir natural talents to advertise shows. For instance, one member has a penchant for graphic design and was encouraged to design posters for our shows.
